A family-owned seafood manufacturer has been hot- and cold-smoking salmon out of a 15,000-square-foot Santa Barbara facility since 2004, turning fresh fish into a shelf-stable product line one batch at a time. That small-footprint, high-value production is exactly the profile we built our case erectors and case packers for, and our own case study on a smoked-fish business scaling up with packaging automation reads like it could have been written about this stretch of the city. Down the road, a broadline foodservice distributor headquartered in Santa Barbara has grown into the second-largest independent distributor of its kind in California, and the leading independent distributor across Central and Southern California, large enough that it opened a major new warehouse in neighboring Goleta in 2023.
Both ends of that business, from small-batch smoked-seafood production to large-scale food distribution and warehousing, depend on packaging equipment that can handle very different volumes without sacrificing consistency. A compact Mars Series vertical form fill seal (VFFS) machine or an EcoBagger/RotoBagger premade-pouch line suits a seafood producer moving from hand-packing to automated bagging, while checkweighers and metal detection catch problems before product reaches a distributor's dock. Santa Barbara Smokehouse runs the smoking and curing; our job is sizing the bagging and case-packing equipment to that batch volume as it grows. We handle California food and beverage producers at either scale, and the same case-packing lines and PackMaster cobot palletizers that load a small smokehouse's cartons also work at the pace a major regional distributor's warehouse runs. Both ends need the line running. A 15,000-square-foot smokehouse and a warehouse serving all of Central and Southern California both draw on the same core equipment lineup, just scaled differently, and our solutions cover both ends, start to finish.
