Santa Clarita's industrial history starts with oil, not packaging: the 1876 well at Pico Canyon was the first commercially successful oil well in the western United States, and the refinery built nearby in Newhall was California's first one that actually worked. A land company incorporated around the same period took over the valley's ranch acreage, later guiding it into the master-planned communities that cover most of the city today. The packaging equipment running through Santa Clarita now serves a different manufacturing base entirely: a maker of patient-identification wristbands and a manufacturer of cochlear implants both base operations here, putting real medical-device and personal-care packaging demand inside city limits. A household and industrial-chemical manufacturer also operates in the city, adding bulk and portioned chemical-product packaging to that same base.
