Bryan was founded in 1866 as a rail depot and grew into an agricultural and livestock trading hub for the Brazos Valley almost from the start. That trade base still runs through a major poultry processor operating a production plant here, among the city's ten largest employers, and that scale of meat processing needs packaging equipment for inspection, case packing, and palletizing on a continuous line. A major public university's agricultural research and extension programs anchor the twin-city Bryan-College Station area today, with a combined workforce of 17,000 keeping that trading identity current. Between the poultry plant and the university's research pipeline, Bryan supports more food-production volume than a Brazos Valley trade hub its size usually carries.
