During World War II, an automaker's East Dallas plant turned out more than 94,000 jeeps and 6,000 military trucks, while a nearby aircraft manufacturer built more than 18,000 planes, including the T-6 Texan, the P-51 Mustang, and the B-24 Liberator. That production identity was reinforced a decade earlier by the 1930 East Texas oil boom that made Dallas the financial center for the Texas and Oklahoma oil industry.
