Evansville was turning out fighter planes and landing ships years before it became a market for packaging equipment. During World War II, local factories built P-47 Thunderbolt fighters and LST landing ships in volumes large enough that the National Park Service named Evansville Indiana's American WWII Heritage City in 2022. Manufacturing here runs deeper than that one wartime stretch: a local glass factory once spun off a truck-chassis maker, and appliance and refrigeration makers set up production in the city long before food and packaging plants became part of the industrial mix.

Food and packaging manufacturing built a separate track in Evansville, distinct from that older industrial base. A Fortune 500, publicly traded plastics-packaging manufacturer is headquartered here today, alongside a major bread bakery and an infant-nutrition producer, and food manufacturing now accounts for roughly 5% of the metro's international exports. A manufacturer of military and retail ready-to-eat food rations is also based in the city, adding a fourth packaging-heavy operation to that group.
