Packaging automation has a long back-story in Peterborough. Cheap, early hydroelectric power made the city one of the first manufacturing hubs of its kind in Canada, and outside industry followed fast: a cereal maker relocated production here, and an electrical equipment manufacturer arrived soon after, giving Peterborough its old nickname, 'The Electric City,' and its first-in-Canada electric streetlights. The city's manufacturing streak went beyond cereal and electrical gear: a canoe-building trade that took hold in the 1850s grew large enough that by 1930, a quarter of Canada's boatbuilding employees worked in the Peterborough area. The electrical manufacturer closed its last Peterborough plant in 2018, and tourism has since passed it as the city's leading industry, but the cereal plant that hydro power first drew here is still running downtown, one of the longer-running food plants in the region.
A plant that has run downtown since the hydro-power era still needs its cookies and cereal wrapped and cased without slowing the line. This downtown line hasn't stopped in decades. For the bakeries, cereal and grain processors, and packaged-food producers still running lines in and around Peterborough, we supply Pack Series flow wrapping and automatic feeding systems for cookies and baked snacks and horizontal form fill seal machines for wrapped goods. Our case study on precision cookie packaging and our locations page for Ontario and our food and beverage industry resources cover the lines available here, and our full solutions lineup rounds out the options for a cereal, bakery, or food-processing plant in this market.
