Saanich is the most populous municipality in the Capital Regional District, yet it carries almost none of the heavy industry that phrase usually implies. It's a suburban district municipality within Greater Victoria on Vancouver Island, built around a knowledge economy anchored by a technology park and part of the University of Victoria rather than factories. The real packaging story is a few kilometers north, on the Saanich Peninsula, where farmland has supported market gardens since the 1840s and 50s, when an early fur-trading company established farms here, including the one preserved today at the historic Craigflower Farm site, to supply its Pacific Northwest operations.
