Shreveport's current market for packaging machines grew out of a manufacturing history that reads like a survey of 20th-century American industry. An automobile assembly plant, an electric-transformer plant, and a payphone-manufacturing plant that once employed about 7,500 workers all operated in the city before that last plant closed in 2001. A single-operator chainsaw was invented in Shreveport and built there exclusively for decades, and a petrochemical-technology manufacturer and a glass manufacturer both ran production operations in the city during that same industrial era. Most of those plants have since closed, but a packaging manufacturer and that same petrochemical-technology producer both still operate as large manufacturing employers in Shreveport today, alongside a commercial food-service equipment maker that has built fryers at a Shreveport facility as part of a larger national manufacturing group.
