Long before Brandon needed packaging equipment of its own, its economy depended on packing houses and a poultry farm rather than an office park. Most local residents worked at two orange-packing houses just over the line in neighboring Valrico during the early-to-mid 20th century, while a local poultry-raising colony raised chickens sold in Ybor City through the 1920s and '30s. After World War II, a family egg operation grew out of that same poultry base into the largest egg producer in eastern Hillsborough County, running until it closed in the late 1990s. Brandon is also the birthplace of a regional sports-bar-and-grill restaurant chain that has since spread across the Southeast, though today the city functions mainly as a bedroom community for Tampa, with no major food-manufacturing employer of its own.

We're based just down the road in Tampa, and that proximity matters more for producers in this part of Hillsborough County than any plant inside Brandon's city limits does today.
